AUTOMATIC DRAWING

Automatic Drawing is a method of visual expression rooted in the subconscious. Drawing inspiration from Carl Jung’s theory of “automatic writing,” this practice bypasses rational control to reveal deeper emotional and psychological states. By integrating improvisation, embodied memory, and cultural influence, Chung has developed a unique visual language that is spontaneous, intuitive, and deeply personal.

In Chung’s process, there is no preliminary sketch or predetermined structure. The hand moves freely across the canvas, guided by impulse rather than intention. Lines emerge as tangled gestures, symbols, or fragments—each one carrying the residue of memory, emotion, and dream. The resulting forms are simultaneously abstract and symbolic: surreal, organic, and suggestive of narratives not yet told.

These images are not created from observation, but from internal navigation. Through this automatic method, the subconscious is visualised in real time. As each mark appears, it deconstructs external stimuli and reconfigures it into something primal and poetic. The work becomes a site of psychic reconstruction, where identity is not fixed but assembled moment by moment.

Chung’s paintings are dense with overlapping figures, fractal geometries, and spontaneous markings. Acrylics, oil, and Chinese ink are blended to reflect a dynamic conversation between Eastern calligraphic sensibilities and Western pictorial traditions. This fusion gives form to cultural duality and personal introspection, expressed not through rational design, but through intuitive encounter.

“I draw automatically,” Chung states, asserting a practice that is not just technique but revelation. In surrendering control, the act of drawing becomes a space of release, transformation, and self-discovery. Through Automatic Drawing, the artist invites the viewer not only to see, but to feel; not only to interpret, but to recognise themselves within the shifting forms.

Automatic Drawing

Chung
